It's the weekend already?! This week flew by, as they all do. Dan and I started the week by terrifyingly getting up in front of our church and sharing a testimony about the miracle we experienced when Elijah's ear was healed a few years ago. I avoided speech class at all costs in high school and college, but it was strongly on my heart to stand in front of 500 people and share our story. I knew it would be good for us and I hoped that it might bless others. It felt so good to get it out! You can watch it here (we speak about 15 minutes before the end of the sermon)! The healing that occurred inside Elijah's ear can only be explained by a miracle and I promised myself I would NEVER forget that and I also promised that I would share it with others whenever appropriate.
Elijah had a rough couple of days this week, but things are a bit better today. We moved his bed from our closet back to the boys' bedroom and since then he has been sleeping later in the mornings. We are constantly adjusting and readjusting and thinking and rethinking everything. Nothing is ever static and I suppose that is a good thing. It keeps us sharp and on our toes (when we're not unsharp and exhausted)!
Sammy, oh my little Sammy. We had some doozie moments this week! I will tell one story from Monday which sums up the week for him. The boys had the day off school, so they were ITCHING to go to the club with me in the morning. As always, I told them what I expected while they were in the child area...no rowdiness, no potty talk and no name calling. When I picked them up they let me know that each of them had broken a rule, therefore no treat from the cafe. As we walked by the cafe, Sammy said, "Well I'm going to go STEAL something then!" I said, "The police arrest people who steal!" I kept walking and heard him running toward me from behind. Just as I had the thought WHAT IS HE DOING?! he punched me as hard as he could in my back! I turned around, TOTALLY SHOCKED, and said, "Did you just PUNCH me?!?!?!?!?" We quickly got to the car and had a very quiet ride home. In our bathroom at home as I was calmly explaining to him why he was going to get spanked, he slowly poured soap into his hand. I asked what he was doing and he said, "If you spank me, I'll rub this soap all over you." THAT is how my boy thinks when things don't go his way. Instead of figuring out how to change behavior, he tries to figure out how to escape from us nasty adults. I'm sure this is partially a 5-year-old thing and partially a strong-willed thing. Whatever it is, I love him to pieces. He is smart and sweet and strong-willed and creative and such a perfectionist and I love him! Punches in the back and all!
Elijah has snowboarding tomorrow morning and then both boys are heading to Grandma's house for a fun overnight visit while Dan and I have a night to ourselves. We are all looking forward to it! Thank you for peeking in. Have a great weekend!

The left ear miracle
I'm typing through happy tears right now. We just got back from Elijah's ENT visit. His hearing test showed very mild hearing loss at low frequencies and NORMAL HEARING for the other frequencies in his left ear. Dr. L's mind was blown. He kept repeating how incredible, fantastic and mind-blowing this outcome is. He said that he NEVER thought things would turn out this way. Back in January Elijah's footplate in his left ear was cracked in half and dried up. Dr. L told us to expect complete deafness in that ear for life. This is such a major answer to prayer!
Dan has been saying it all along. Even on that sad day back in January he told me that he knew his hearing would come back. He was right! I am so incredibly thankful and happy about this news. Elijah has enough things that make life challenging for him. I am so relieved that this won't add to his struggles. Thank you thank you thank you, God!
Apparently Elijah should never take up scuba diving or deep-water swimming, so hopefully he doesn't develop an intense desire to try that. We will do another hearing test in January to make sure everything is still looking good!
In other news, I started noticing a few days ago that E has been looking extra tired. He was struggling here at home and I saw some behaviors pop back up that I hadn't seen in a while. He had a tough day at school yesterday and needed a bit of extra attention from his teacher. We'll move his bedtime up a bit for the next few days and hopefully that will help him feel more rested.
We LOVE his teacher. Instead of seeing Elijah as a behavior problem and sending him out of the room, she does her best to help him work through whatever is going on. She told me that she didn't want to make a big deal out of the things that happened yesterday because she knows he's just tired. Wow! There's another answer to prayer!
I have a bunch of cute Sammy-isms that I've been wanting to share, so I'll do that soon!

A miracle before our eyes!
We still know nothing specific about the EEG results, aside from the fact that they were "abnormal." We have an appointment on Wednesday morning at 8:00 to discuss the results with Elijah's neurologist. It's anxiety-inducing to think about it, if I'm being honest. I know it'll be an answer for us and it's another step toward figuring out the Elijah Puzzle, but I am a mama and I do worry.
Now for amazing, miraculous news that will blow you away. If you don't believe in God and the power of prayer, you might reconsider after reading this. You might remember me writing about what Dr. L said to us after E's recent ear surgery. He told us that there was very very little hope that Elijah would ever be able to hear again out of his left ear. He said that the only reason he was telling us there was a chance was because he didn't like to say the word "never."
You know the rest of the story. We have been moving forward with the assumption that Elijah's left ear is deaf and will be forever. In the past week or so, though, Elijah has been insisting that he can hear a little bit out of his left ear. Dan and I have tested him a few times by plugging his right ear and whispering very softly into his left ear. He was actually repeating words back to us! But I still thought that maybe his right ear was just super-human.
Fast forward to today. Dan brought E to see Dr. L for surgery follow-up. They gave him a hearing test to check for the small chance that there might be residual conductive hearing. Guess what. HE HAS CONDUCTIVE HEARING. It's minimal, just like it was before surgery, but it exists! The doctor said, "There is really no way to explain this." Dan said, "Yes there is! Prayer!" There have been so many people praying for Elijah about this specific thing in the past month. SO MANY PEOPLE. Dan has been telling me since January 7th, as I sat crying in the waiting room at Children's Hospital after being told that Elijah would be deaf is his left ear for his entire life, "A miracle is going to happen. He is NOT going to be deaf. I just know it." Sure enough, my faithful husband has been right all along.
Elijah's footplate on his left side was literally broken in half and totally damaged. It had been that way for some time, based on the fact that there was no fluid in or around it. The fact that even a few cells survived is a miracle. THANK YOU all for praying. Thanks to your prayers, a miracle has happened right before our eyes and our oldest boy will be able to hear again.
At some point this coming summer, we'll do another surgery to check for cholesteatoma regrowth and also to see how much hearing can be restored in that ear. Until then, we will manage with what we have! Elijah has been cleared to return to school for half days for one month, and hopefully he'll be ready for full days after that. I'm waiting to hear back from a few people from his school, but I'm assuming we can get him back soon! (Pray for good-behavior angels to surround him, please.)
One last thing that made us giggle. Dan was explaining to Dr. L about the abnormal EEG and how we are trying to put all of these puzzle pieces together to figure out what is going on. Dr. L said, "Elijah's just an evil genius, controlling everybody's minds." There you go, puzzle solved. :)
And THERE YOU GO....you can now say you know someone who God performed a miracle upon.
